Barbara Wells is currently working as Director of
the Meridian Activity Center where she "searches out" new talent to amuse and educate retired persons and adults
over the age of 21.
She returned to Meridian, MS, her hometown, in 1996 from Tokyo, Japan where she
had been teaching English and working at The Pacific Stars and Stripes as secretary to the Commander/Publisher of the
paper. She lived in Japan five (5) years and loved every minute. Before Japan, Barbara worked in art galleries
and picture framing shops in San Francisco and New Orleans.
At Meridian Community College she studied with Homer
Casteel and continued her art studies at Southern. After finishing college in Hattiesburg (BA, Art Education, 1972),
Barbara moved to New Orleans. Her passion in those first days after college, was black and white photography.
She studied in Louisville, KY at the Center fo Photographic Studies in 1974 to 1975, after which time she moved to Dayton,
Ohio and then to San Francisco.
Barbara returned to Meridian to care for her mother and father. One
of the first things she did upon her return was to go back to school and get her master's degree in counseling at MSU-Meridian
branch; her focus was working with seniors and their caregivers. She was an active member in NAMI, the National Alliance
for the Mentally Ill, for several years.
Today, given enough time, Barbara wants to continue her hobbies of gardening
and woodworking.
Barbara is a member of the local East Mississippi Master Gardeners, the Ben Arthur Davis Garden
Club, the Merrehope Round Table Club and the Meridian Museum of Art Artist's Group.
